Running a marathon on a one mile course actually works! Far from being boring, seeing the front runners fly past and passing others was great motivation, on a beautiful loop around North Weald Country Park, near Brentwood in Essex.
There was a 10k and half marathon on the same course at the same time. Starting 0.1 miles behind the half marathoners, who started 0.1 miles behind the start of the loop, was an incentive for a fast start. Never a good idea in a marathon, but its hard to resist runners in front of you.
It was a tough course too, with a short, sharp climb followed by a long, gentle descent through the woods. Then another easier ascent/descent. With drinks and jelly babies at the end of each lap, and plenty of spectators, this was a cracking race.
I finished this one in 4:07:39.
